Did you know that one of the cleverest space-saving furniture designs in history wasn't created by an architect or an engineer, but by a man deeply in love?
The story of the wall bed (or Murphy Bed) is as romantic as it is ingenious—and it all began in San Francisco at the turn of the 20th century.
A 1900s Romance and Strict Etiquette
Around 1900, a young man named William Lawrence Murphy was living in a modest, one-room apartment in San Francisco. He had fallen head over heels in love with a beautiful opera singer.
However, courtship in Victorian-era America came with strict social etiquette. Back then, it was considered entirely improper for a respectable young woman to enter a gentleman's bedroom. Because William's entire home consisted of a single room dominated by a large bed, he faced a major dilemma: how could he entertain the lady he loved without breaking moral customs?
A Stroke of Genius: Turning a Bedroom into a Living Room
Refusing to let strict manners stand in the way of romance, William came up with a brilliant idea. He designed a counterbalanced hinge system that allowed his bed to fold away vertically inside a closet frame.
In a matter of seconds, his bedroom vanished, transforming the space into an elegant, proper living room.
The secret meeting was a success, etiquette was preserved, and the Hidden Bed was born.
From Romance to a High-Society Trend
Following his success in love (and courtship!), William realized that millions of city dwellers faced the exact same space constraints. He founded the Murphy Door Bed Company in New York and officially patented his invention.
By the roaring 1920s, wall beds had exploded in popularity across North America. Owning a Murphy bed became a true status symbol—a mark of clever, modern living featured in luxury apartments and Hollywood comedy films alike. The company remained a proud family legacy for generations, with William's grandson, Clark W. Murphy, taking over as president in 1987.
Modern Wall Beds: The Romance Lives On
Fast forward to today: while social customs around hosting guests have certainly changed, our need for smart, flexible living space in modern UK homes is greater than ever.
What started as a romantic solution in 1900 has evolved into today's sophisticated vertical wall bed systems with integrated daytime sofas and smart storage cabinets. Just like William Murphy over a century ago, we still believe you shouldn't have to choose between comfort, space, and living in style!
